The Noble Shaykh, al-Muhaddith, Ahmad al-Najmi—may Allah bestow His Mercy upon him—on Reading the Qur’an during Ramadan

Questioner: “Is it preferred for a person to recite the Qur’an and complete it (i.e. its recitation) a number of times, or to read it slowly with the Tafsir only once or twice during Ramadan?”

Shaykh Ahmad al-Najmi: “If he reads it one time with the Tafsir and its [proper] understanding, then that is better than to read it hastily this way. Once when a person said to ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas’ud, ‘I read four Azja yesterday.’ He (i.e. Ibn Mas’ud) replied, ‘Like the rapid recitation of poetry?’ So a person should read it with contemplation [of its meaning], even if he has prior knowledge, meaning, he has read the Tafsir and it is clear to him, it is still better for him to read slowly with contemplation and to revise what he has already read from the Tafsir.”
