Shaykh Uthaymin on Traveling for the Purpose of Breaking the Fast

Questioner: “What is the ruling on traveling during Ramadan for the purpose of breaking the fast?”

Shaykh al-‘Uthaymin: “Fasting as a rule is obligatory upon the people, rather, it is a pillar from the pillars of al-Islam as is well known, and it is not permissible for a person to use trickery to remove the obligation from himself. So whoever journeys for the purpose of breaking his fast, the journey is impermissible for him as well as the breaking of his fast. So it is incumbent upon him to repent to Allah, return from the travel and fast; and if he does not return, it is still upon him to fast even upon his travel. This is because trickery does not remove the obligation, just as it does not make the prohibited act permissible.”
